Public Labs

Harvard-MIT Data Center is committed to providing the Harvard and MIT communities with open work areas for researchers and students who are conducting statistical inquiries. The HMDC Public Services Group maintains several state-of-the-art computer laboratories at the Center for Government and International Studies (CGIS) complex, next to the Harvard Graduate School of Design. A full array of statistical, GIS, office productivity, and multimedia applications are available on workstations. All Harvard and MIT community members with a valid ID can register for a HMDC Novell lab account, granting full access to lab resources. General assistance for lab users is available from the HMDC Lab Help Desk during extended business hours, with specific statistical, data and GIS office hours available at set times. as well as a computer training lab in CGIS Knafel North building.

Our public lab facilities are located at CGIS Knafel Building, 1737 Cambridge Street in Cambridge Massachusetts The building is open to the public during normal business hours. First time visitors should head downstairs to the Concourse level lab in N024 and register for an account with our lab help desk in N026. People registering for HMDC Novell accounts must have a current, non-expired Harvard or MIT picture ID. In general, HMDC Novelll account holders have unlimited access and rights to all lab resources, including software. However, some software packages have limited licenses available and a few have usage restrictions. Please contact us if you would like to inquire about specific software or resource usage.
